    Hilaire Belloc(Author)

    Book details

Hilaire Belloc examines the five most destructive heretical movements to have affected Christian Civilization: Arianism, Mohammedanism (Islam), Albigensianism (Cathar), The Reformation (Protestant), and “The Modern Phase.” Belloc describes how these movements began, how they spread, and how they continued to influence the world up until the time of his writing (1936). The Chapter on Islam is especially relevant in light of current events; in it Belloc accurately predicts the renewal of Jihadist aggression towards Western Civilization.

This was written before World War 2 but managed to anticipate the world as it is today. Very informative about its topics, I didn't know anything about the particular heresies but could recognise them as I read. It was an easy read; I was worried I wouldn't understand it, but he was a good writer who managed to be informative without being too wordy or scholarly.

Of course this is an excellent book and an unexpected read from the great Hilaire Belloc. Very helpful for exams around Middle Ages and Crusades.

My confusion over what is happening in the world today led me to read this book. It gives a persuasive counterbalance to what I read and hear in the media today . He is remarkably prescient regarding the current conflicts around the Europe but does not get bogged down with horror and sensationalism. The attempted undermining of the Catholic world with a mixture of lies and truths selected from the whole truth by various heresies. Before reading this book, I did not know what a heresy was. Now I do . If you are RC this should be a source of strength to boost your own faith.
