    Book details

The SCM Studyguide to Mission explores the nature of Christian mission in contemporary post-modern society. It presents a range of answers from the past as well as the present. It lays out some of the Biblical and doctrinal groundwork that is needed before looking for an answer. It examines the main historic types of mission in the Christian tradition, seeing how they were forged in the cross currents of history and how they continue to be expressed by different Christian communities today. It looks at contemporary social, economic and religious trends in society, global and local, listening to the signs of the times. It assesses different expressions of mission in the postmodern context, assessing how consistent they are with the underlying principles of Jesus' own mission in Galilee. In all of this, it seeks to present resources that any student would need to work out their own understanding of the issues.

Stephen Spencer teaches mission studies and historical theology on the Yorkshire Ministry Course and is a visiting lecturer at the University of Leeds.

I find Spencer's writing engaging and informed and I recommend this as one of the core-text books for a module on Christian mission that I teach to Anglican ordinands and Methodist student ministers. Students find it accessible and inspiring. This is definitely a worthwhile practical introduction to Christian mission and is a good investment.

One the set texts for the local ministry programme in Guildford, a very helpful and thought provoking book that covers the history of mission from a sound and helpful theological perspective.

Easier to read than Bosch 'Transforming Mission - Paradigm shifts in mission'. Well structured and written with diagrams to clearly illustrate different paradigms as well as a very useful diagram showing paradigm shifts through time and how they are expressed in today's church. Very useful as an introduction to the study of the history of Christian Mission, how the different paradigms compare with the Galilean principles and questions that encourage the consideration of those paradigms in the church today. Excellent book - thank you!!

Easily understood but getting right to the point, excellent references, I thoroughly enjoyed the read and my idea of" mission" has been enhanced and it will be a very useful now and in the future

A good summary of other's views of how the church has done mission over the centuries, I am not so sure about his description of Jesus ministry.
